Using the TAB key in Outline Numbering and Bullets

Word – Using the TAB key in Outline Numbering and Bullets

When creating Multilevel and Bullet lists you can move up and down the levels using the TAB and SHIFT TAB keys.

Bulleted List:

  • Inserting the first bullet positions your list at Level 1
    • Pressing the TAB key demotes the list to Level 2 with the symbol for this level
  • Pressing SHIFT and TAB promoted the list back to Level 1

Outline Numbering:

  1. Inserting a Multilevel List style of your choice with this as Level 1
    1. Pressing the TAB key demotes the list to Level 2
  2. Pressing SHIFT and TAB promoted the list back to Level 1

However, if the TAB and SHIFT TAB keys do not do this for you then you will need to go to Word Options to amend the setting.

In Word 2007, click the Office button and then click on Word Options

In Word 2010 and 2013, click the File button and then Options

  • Click on Proofing
  • Then AutoCorrect Options to display the dialogue box
  • Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab and at the bottom put a tick in the Set left and first-indent with tabs and backspaces tick box.
  • Click OK twice
